For a suggested drive from Stonewall Farm through beautiful New Hampshire villages with interesting stops along the way, we recommend places we have enjoyed over the years. The Fall season is the perfect time to see some of our favorite things!
- The first stop after leaving Stonewall Farm will be the Franklin Pierce Homestead.
- The next stop will be at a HISTORIC STONE ARCH BRIDGE at the intersection of Jones Road and Beard Brook Road. Hillsborough is famous for these stone arch bridges. There is an informational brochure available at the farm.
- When leaving the bridge, take a right then another right onto Shedd Road. At the end of Shedd Road you will see one of the first stone arch bridges. A great photo opportunity. Next, continue down bucolic Jones Road where you will find some of the finest historic homes in Hillsborough on your way to historic HILLSBOROUGH CENTER. Here you will want visit GIBSON PEWTER and WELLSWEEP GALLERY. Hillsborough Center is one of the most wonderfully preserved New Hampshire villages, one of several on your tour today.
- Continuing on from Hillsborough Center, you will be heading toward East Washington. Along the way you will pass Eccardt Farm, stop in, they love visitors.
- After the beautiful village of East Washington, head towards Washington Center. On the way stop at the NORTH COUNTRY GLASS. The first two weekends of October is a treat.
- If you skip the glass blower, take a right on Route 31 North and continue on to the quintessential New England town green of Washington, NH. One of our most favorite spots of the entire tour. WASHINGTON TOWN GREEN is as pure New England as it gets with stark white homes, a church, schoolhouse (now police station), and town hall. We suggest you also stop by the HISTORICAL SOCIETY.
- From Washington Center head north on Route 31 and feel free to stop at PILLSBURY STATE PARK, just 4 miles North of the center of Washington, where you just may see a moose or two.
- Follow the map all the way to MT SUNAPEE and take a chair lift to the mountain top and enjoy some amazing views of Lake Sunapee and surroundings, a great way to take in the foliage!
- Then go to the historic gardens and estate on the shore of Lake Sunapee, THE FELLS, then down to the COVERED BRIDGE in Bradford.
- If you hit the intersection of 103/114 you have gone too far, it is a quarter-mile north of that intersection.
- There is also a grove of virgin pine trees in Bradford.
- Continue down Route 114 into picturesque Henniker with New England College and another beautiful stone bridge. Just off Route 114 there is also another covered bridge, accessible by foot through the college grounds.
- Head back to Stonewall Farm but take Henniker’s Western Ave. to Contoocook Falls Road, the scenic road back along the Contoocook River, to Routes 9/202 West, Route 31 North, then left on Windsor Road and Stonewall Farm.
